What is a mileage tax refund?
If you use your own vehicle or vehicles for work, you may be able to claim tax relief on the approved mileage rate.
It is a fairly common practice for employees to use their own vehicles for business travel, and in recompense they are generally able to claim the expenses for fuel or mileage from their employers.
What might not be well known is that if your employer does not pay you any mileage expenses – or if you are only paid a low amount for each mile travelled – then you may be eligible to claim mileage allowance relief, in the form of a tax rebate, from HM Revenue & Customs.
How long does my claim take?
One of the main reasons why it is essential to get your claim in as quickly as possible is due to the amount of time needed to make a claim. Normally, it would take around 6-8 weeks to get a pay-out from HMRC however due to the COVID pandemic HMRC are advising that tax refunds can take up to 28 weeks.
Am I guaranteed a refund?
If you meet the criteria then yes. While we aim to secure everyone a refund it all depends on your individual circumstances and the final calculation from HMRC.
